Cheese Strata & Savory

This is bread pudding turned into a main dish instead of a dessert. It can even be put together the night before, refrigerated and then baked for a special breakfast.

6 slices stale bread, cubed
2 cups shredded Swiss cheese
1 cup diced ham
1/4 cup sliced mushrooms
1/4 cup chopped green pepper
1/4 chopped onion
4 eggs, lightly beaten
1 cup milk
2 tsp. Dijon mustard
1 tsp. chopped savory
1/2 salt
1/4 tsp. pepper
1/4 tsp. ground nutmeg

Preheat oven to 375 degrees F. Grease an 8" x 12" casserole dish. Place one half of bread cubes in casserole dish. Combine cheese, ham, mushrooms, green pepper and onion. Place in casserole dish and top with remaining bread. In a mixing bowl, combine eggs, milk, mustard, savory, salt, pepper and nutmeg. Pour into casserole. Bake for 20 to 25 minutes, or until puffed and golden.

Serves 4.
